Key rules
- Author names
- Write the surname first, followed by initials. Use an ampersand before the final author.
- Date
- Put the year in brackets after the author. Use (n.d.) if there is no date.
- Titles
- Use sentence case. Italicise book and journal names, but not article titles.
- Links
- Use the DOI when available. Otherwise, add the page URL.

Common questions
- How do I cite a source with no author?
- Move the title to the author position and cite a short form of it in text, e.g. (“Physical Activity,” 2023).
- Do I need a page number in text?
- Only for direct quotations: (Kahneman, 2011, p. 24). Paraphrases need author and year only.
